After getting bombarded with cryptic tweets, Facebook posts, and random blog posts, many of you are probably wondering what exactly is Tripsy?
I am very happy to announce that the FTU audience selected Tripsy as one of the winners and we are moving on to the final round to compete for $50,000!
How We Arrived At Tripsy
3 months ago when we started brainstorming about what we wanted to build, we asked ourselves a simple question…
- How could we make travel better for the average person?
When we looked at other travel startups we admired, there was one common thing that stood out.
They all started by solving a specific travel problem that their founders had encountered.
- Uber: Why can’t I flag a taxi down on my smartphone instead of standing outside?
- Airbnb: Why do people have to stay in hotels when they travel? I have an extra room that I’d love to rent out to other travellers.
- Kayak: Why do I need a travel agent to provide me with an airfare quote? I’d prefer to look it up myself.
So instead of trying to come up with some revolutionary “Facebook for travel” startup that doesn’t really solve a specific problem that travelers face, we simply framed our original question of “how could we make travel better for the average person?” in the context of “how would we make travel better for ourselves?”.
As soon as we flipped the question around and started looking at it from our perspective of being travelers who fly over 100,000 miles a year, the answer of what to build was pretty easy…
Why Is Travel Planning So Difficult?
If you are a “road warrior”, there are certain things you quickly learn from experience like which security lines are shortest but one thing that has never gotten easier for us (regardless of how much we travel) is actually trying to plan a trip.
It hasn’t mattered if we were trying to plan a short weekend getaway to New York or an extended 3 week tour of Asia. The process of planning a trip has always been terrible…
When travel agents existed, you simply told them where you wanted to go and they would give you a couple of itinerary options to pick from.
In 2014, thanks to the Kayaks of the world, we have all become our own travel agents. Now instead of a couple of pre-set options, there are literally hundreds of travel sites that you need to search to construct your own itinerary.
While having different options and competition is great, once you go to Expedia, Travelocity, Kayak, etc and find something you like, there is no easy way to save and share what you have just found with the other people traveling with you…
In our case, our short-term solution to this problem has always been to simply create a shared Google Doc and then invite everyone going on the trip to join it. Then when we find flights and hotels that we want to save and share, we just copy paste the information into the Google Doc and everything is in one central place for everyone to see.
While Google Docs does get the job done, no one would say that it does it in a particularly easy or effective fashion because at the end of the day, it isn’t designed specifically with travel planning in mind.
Once we realized that, we knew what we had to build…
So What Exactly Is Tripsy?
Tripsy is the easiest way to plan a trip.
Tripsy solves the 2 major problems travelers face when planning a trip:
- Saving — Tripsy allows you to save ANY flight or hotel options regardless of what travel sites you found them on.
- Sharing — Everything you save is stored in a central “cloud” so anyone going on the trip can easily view all the potential options.
How Tripsy Works
We tried to make Tripsy as easy as possible, so the entire site is powered by a bookmarklet that you simply drag and drop to your bookmarks bar.
It works with any browser (even mobile) and it doesn’t install anything on your computer.
Once the bookmarklet is in place, then you are free to visit any of your normal travel sites and perform your search.
If you find a flight or hotel that you like, you simply click on the bookmarklet and Tripsy saves the flight or hotel for you!
All the information you save is now accessible on Tripsy and displayed in your Tripsy Cloud.
To share your Tripsy Cloud with other people traveling on the trip, all you have to do is share the URL and then they can view or add to the Cloud with any flights & hotels they have found.
We have only been working full-time on Tripsy for less than a month but if you want to take Tripsy for a spin, feel free to check out our demo here.
Again THIS IS JUST A DEMO and not the final product so you CANNOT use it to plan a trip. However it should give you a pretty good idea of what the final product will look like and do.
Building a startup is always a work in progress and to build the best possible product, we need feedback from real users.
We are really excited to release our beta version of Tripsy within the coming month. If you want to be one of the first people to use Tripsy to plan your upcoming trip, please sign up below.
We hope this tiny glimpse into what we are doing with Tripsy has gotten you as excited as we are for what is to come.
Being travelers ourselves, we know firsthand what a pain in the butt it is to try and plan a trip, so rest assured we are working 24/7 to try and solve this problem.
