You Never Know Who Is On Flyertalk…
As most of you probably heard, WhatsApp was bought by Facebook for something like $1 trillion dollars (or $19 billion dollars if you are actually keeping track).
I was perusing through FlyerTalk the other day and came across this old post by Jan Koum (WhatsApp founder) in 2009 promoting his “new” iPhone app WhatsApp to the FlyerTalk community.
Of course only 1 person responded to his post in 2009, but in Sept 2013 (4 years later), he posted a follow up on the thread when his small iPhone app had something like 300 million users…
After the Facebook acquisition was done, Jan posted again on the thread. Quite hilarious that his M&M award ticket was a major factor in getting the deal done…

Hilarious!
There’s an old Chinese proverb that says “The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names.”
It’s called WhatsApp, with an “s.”
Haha thanks. I fixed it. I don’t use WhatSapp so I never knew there was an s.
You just stumbled across it while perusing Flyertalk ironically days before the sale, and not tipped off by the dozens of other bloggers that posted it already?
I think it’d be more authentic if you posted “a bunch of people reported about the WhatsApp founder on Flyertalk, so I pulled up his old threads”.
Give credit where credit is due.
Fairly certain I am the first one to post this but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Actually, The Gate, TBB, and Runningwithmiles posted it on Saturday and TPG yesterday.
Well thanks for informing me. You seem to be correct that those guys did post before me. I didn’t see any of those posts before I wrote this post.
+1 . I subscribed to your blog because you post good stuff every now and then, but this was pretty lame. This has been all over the miles and points blogosphere. No harm in giving an HT to a fellow blogger.
I am certainly pro HT but I honestly didn’t see those posts before I posted. Nevertheless there is bound to be duplicate content, so my apologies.
Hi there, its nice piece of writing about media print, we all know media is
a fantastic source of information.
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is required to get set up?
I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% certain. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks
