FFU Reader Hiren sent me a tip on cheap airfare to India for flights during November 2013 – February 2014.

From my experience, economy airfare to India can range between $1,000 – $1,500+ depending on the season. Anything under $1,000 is considered a pretty good deal.

I did a quick search for November 2013 and was able to find flight from Chicago to Bombay for $742 on United, Swiss, and Lufthansa.

To search for these fares, simply go to Kayak.com and enter your dates.

I always click on the +/- 3 days button so it shows the cheapest fares by date.

As you can see on the calendar below, almost all the fares in November from Chicago to Bombay are in the mid $700s!

After you hit search, you can see what days have the cheapest fares.

I didn’t search for many other cities but I did do LAX – BOM and found fares in the low $800s.

I also did a quick look on Flyertalk and it seems some people have found fares as low as $600.

Remember to double check the fare class if the flight you are purchasing isn’t on United metal. Not all Lufthansa and Swiss flights earn full mileage credit with United, you might only get 50%. More information about that can be found in the threads above!

Do you see these fares often to India?

I was able to get a coach ticket from Newark to Madras in October 2011 for $870. The routing was like this: United to Brussels and Brussels to Madras back when Jet Airways was still flying Madras <-> Brussels; the return trip was Jet Airways to Delhi and United to Newark. Had a 13 hour layover in Delhi; but went and did some sight seeing as much as the public transportation would allow.

Do you ever see fares like this for Madras? Bombay or Delhi have infinite possibilities when it comes to choice of routing/carrier and Madras is losing what little it has.
